Dads bless children for Father's Day
6/1/2004
WHEN THE RECTOR of a San Diego church wanted ideas for celebrating Father’s Day, he got a doozy from one of his parishioners.

Jack Horner says he worked on ideas all day then finally asked his wife, Lori.
“Have the fathers bless their children,” said Lori without missing a beat.

“Brilliant,” thought Jack.

“Of course,” said Wayne Sanders, rector of Good Samaritan Episcopal Church.

The dads were given three weeks’ notice: “Prepare a blessing for each of your children.”
On Father’s Day, at the time of the sermon, some dads brought their children forward, took the microphone and spoke (or read) their prepared blessings. To each, the congregation affirmed, “Amen.” Then the less gregarious dads had their opportunity. They blessed their children in the pews where they stood.

Some fathers blessed children who had gone to be with the Lord.

Some children who had no father present received blessings from a number of fathers in the congregation.

Finally, Sanders blessed his children, the congregation of Good Samaritan.

The Father’s Day service is now an annual tradition.
