Nigeria elects Virginia bishop
to serve North American ‘convocation’

7/1/2006
The Anglican Church of Nigeria on June 28 announced that its Episcopal Synod had elected four priests as bishops, including the Rev. Canon Martyn Minns of Truro Church in Fairfax, Va. The Nigerian church’s website said that Minns, who was a deputy from the Diocese of Virginia at General Convention, was elected to serve the church’s Convocation of Anglican Churches in North America.

CANA serves about 20 churches in the United States and Canada and was established by Archbishop Peter J. Akinola, primate of Nigeria, in April 2005. In a letter at the time, he wrote, “Our intention is not to challenge or intervene in the churches of ECUSA or the Anglican Church of Canada but to provide safe harbor for all those who can no longer find their spiritual home in those churches.”

The Church of Nigeria’s website noted that the synod also had elected Simon Mutum of the Diocese of Jalingo as “bishop for nongeographic nomadic mission.” No other details were offered.
