AWE enters next phase of growth with new leadership
At 12:00 noon on Wednesday May 14, Phoebe Griswold passed the leadership reigns of AWE, Anglican Women’s Empowerment, to the newly elected team of co chairs and executive committee members at a lunch at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church. As many thank yous were handed out to members of the retiring leadership team and roses presented, Phoebe spoke about the incredible growth that has happened within AWE over the past 5 years that she has guided the group. Many milestones were discussed and remembrances spoken of which highlight the success of the work that has been done among this group of dedicated AWE members and the many women throughout the Anglican Communion who have been empowered by their exposure to the UN and other Anglican women.
The new leadership team is comprised of Pat Yankus and Jamel Shimpfky as co chairs, Kim Polhemus as secretariat, Inez Saley as financial administrator and the Rev. Maylin Biggadike as spiritual guide. They will immediately begin to lead AWE in its next phase of growth.
Our goals are to:
- Enable greater representation and participation of women from all of the Anglican Provinces to the UNCSW’s annual meetings;
- Develop a questionnaire that will assist the Provinces in looking at women’s status in light of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPA) within their own communities;
- Educate and empower women through exposure and training about global issues addressed in the Beijing Platform for Action (BPA), Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and UN Resolution # 1325;
- Work toward equal representation of women in the ACC and other bodies of the Anglican Communion.
