New Anglican Observer at the United Nations sought for Global role

6/1/2006
[Anglican Communion News Service]  The post of Anglican Observer at the United Nations will become vacant in July with the retirement of Archdeacon Taimalelagi Fagamalama Tuatagaloa-Matalavea.

A tribute to the Archdeacon, recently honored with the Cross of St. Augustine by the Archbishop of Canterbury, will appear in the next issue of Anglican Episcopal World, a quarterly publication of the Anglican Communion Office in London, England. [http://www.anglicancommunion.org/aw/index.cfm]

"The good work begun over these past years must be continued and increase in its scope if the post UN Observer truly serves the Communion," said Canon Kenneth Kearon, secretary general of the Anglican Communion. "Our Anglican brothers and sisters face extraordinary circumstances in many parts of the world. Having our Anglican Observer gives us, as church, an opportunity to be seen and heard in one of the World's most important forums."

Those who have served as Anglican Observer -- the Rt. Rev. Sir. Paul Reeves of New Zealand, the Rt. Rev. James Ottley of Panama and Archdeacon Tai of Samoa -- have brought unique gifts to the post, and have used the post to serve other programs that relate to the UN focus and the Communion focus at the same time, such as the emphasis on women's concerns at the UN during the past several years.
