The island of Java in southern Indonesia was hit with another earthquake on July 17, triggering a two-meter wave tsunami that killed more than 550 people and injured countless others. Thousands more have been displaced and many more are in need of critical medical attention and life-saving supplies. The quake hit the southern portion of Ciamis and West Java: Its power was felt in all the neighboring villages.
Episcopal Relief and Development is working through an ecumenical partner, Action by Churches Together (ACT) to send emergency assistance to the people in Java. Currently, our implementing partners in the field, the Church World Service Indonesia, Yakkum Emergency Unit (YEU), the Christian Foundation for Public Health, and Yayasan Tanggul Bencana Indonesia (YBTI) are working together to meet the urgent needs of the most affected regions. Basic supplies such as water, food and temporary shelters has already been sent and a medical team has been deployed to the town of Pangandaran, an area that suffered the most damage: More than a quarter of lives lost were people who resided in this coastal area.
A field kitchen has been set up in Adipala village in the Cilacap District which is providing food to displaced families. Our partners are also working to assess a long-term strategy to rebuild damaged infrastructure in Java. An estimated damage of 3.1 billion in US dollars has been amassed thus far in this country.
ERD is continuing its support of Indonesia following the earthquake on May 27. Additional funds have been distributed to our partners in an effort to provide relief to the region since that disaster first hit. To date ERD and our partners have been able to rehabilitate clean water and sanitation for 5,875 families. More than 2,626 families in 12 villages received critical medical care and approximately 100 children were given trauma counselling.
