Allan E. Smith dies at 83

[Episcopal News Service]  The Rev Allan E. Smith, OHC, died on September 13, at Mount Calvary Retreat House and Monastery, Santa Barbara, California. He was 83.

A native of Providence, Rhode Island, Smith was introduced to the Episcopal Church as a college student and baptized at age 20 at St. Stephen's Parish, Providence. He attended Providence College and Dartmouth College and graduated from Brown University. He received his M.Div. degree from Nashotah House, Nashotah, Wisconsin, and was ordained deacon and priest in 1954. He served as assistant at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Coconut Grove, Florida, until entering the novitiate of the Order of the Holy Cross in 1956. He made his Life Profession in 1961. He then served for 13 years at the Holy Cross Mission in Bolahun, Liberia, West Africa and thereafter at West Park, New York, and Tower Hill, South Carolina before moving to Mount Calvary, Santa Barbara in 1984. During the last 15 years he was intensively involved with the ecumenical Kairos Prison Ministry in Southern California and lived their motto: "Listen. Listen. Love. Love."

His remains will be committed to the columbarium at Holy Cross Monastery, West Park, New York following the funeral Mass there on October 5.
