The Diocese of Indianapolis has committed $500,000 to the Diocese of Haiti “for assistance in rebuilding its cathedral, parishes, churches, schools, and other diocesan facilities and the feeding and housing the needy of its nation.”
The funds will be paid over a period of five years. According to Bishop Catherine Waynick, “The Bishop of Haiti has made it clear that the cathedral center is his priority, and I have assured him that we intend to honor Haiti’s priorities. The point is that the Diocese of Haiti will make the decisions about allocating the funds.” The complex which previously housed Holy Trinity Cathedral in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, also served as home to a music school, an elementary and secondary school, a vocational school, and a convent.
The diocesan gift follows a $400,000 matching grant from Christ Church Cathedral in Indianapolis toward the Rebuild Our Church in Haiti campaign, which coupled with an additional $100,000 match from Trinity Wall Street helped energize the early phase of the church-wide, grass roots campaign that has raised over $2.7 million to date in cash and pledges toward restoring the physical infrastructure of the Diocese of Haiti. The 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Haiti in January of 2010 destroyed over seventy percent of the churches, schools, and other institutions there.
