Asians Join UN Commission on the Status of Women

[EAM - Episcopal Diocese of New York] The 54th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, New York City, March 1-12, 2010 gathers Anglican women delegates from the worldwide Anglican Communion

Thousands of women from around the world will be gathering in New York City from March 1-12, 2010, to attend the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, an annual event that tracts and evaluates progress by member states and the world at large in advancing women’s rights. The  UN sponsored Women’s World Congress in 1995 that took place in Beijing made a big leap forward by regarding   women’s rights as human rights and crafted the Beijing Platform for Action (BPFA).  If implemented by member nations would redound in improving the lives of women and girls.   This year marks the 15th year of that historic meeting.

The Theme of this UNCSW is:  Beijing +15 – Review and Appraisal of Progress Achieved Fifteen Years after the Implementation of the 1995 Beijing Platform of action.

Coordinated through the Anglican United Nations Office, there are about 100 Anglican woman delegates from Africa, Asia, Latin America, Canada, and the USA.   From Asia are Ms Daw Yin Yin - Myanmar, Ms Ruth Y.U. Gomez – North India, Ms Pamela Abana - Melanesia, Rev. Kyrie Kim –Korea, Mrs. Patricia Dalmas-Philippines, Ms Komemoto Michiko and  Ms Ikemoto Machiko – Japan, and Alice Garrick –Pakistan.

They will be busy attending meetings  organized by the UNCSW, and various side events sponsored by  women Nongovernmental organizations affiliated to the United nations, the Episcopal church, and the Anglican Women’s  Empowerment.
However, I hope our Asian Ministries here will be able to connect with them during their sojourn among us.
