EPPN Alert: Feeding the Addiction or Breaking the Cycle?
Thanks to your tireless efforts during the last year, Congress once again rejected attempts to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling.  Key Republicans in the House and Senate joined Democrats to protect the Arctic but the President’s FY ’07 Federal Budget proposes yet again to open this extraordinary wildlife refuge to drilling.

“We’ll keep fighting proponents of drilling in the Arctic Refuge until they finally realize they aren’t going to win – it’s that simple,”  Bishop Mark MacDonald, Bishop of the Diocese of Alaska, announced this week. Click Here to join Bishop MacDonald in saying NO to drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Only one short week after boldly declaring in his State of the Union Address that America must break its addiction to oil, the President presented a budget that feeds our addiction instead including revenues from the Arctic that experts agree won’t be available for at least 10 years.  The President is right about our oil addiction – the United States consumes 25% of the world’s available oil while possessing only 3% of all the world’s oil reserves.

Instead of perpetuating our national oil addiction, America needs true leadership on energy issues.  We must meet our energy needs by embracing clean energy solutions that keep our economy moving while protecting God’s creation for future generations.  And we must protect the sacred places that are part of America’s natural heritage, including the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is land sacred to the Gwich’in Nation, nearly 90 percent of whom are Episcopalians.  Drilling threatens the Porcupine Caribou that the Gwich’in have depended on for survival and culture for 10,000 years.  Development threatens the subsistence rights of the Gwich’in, which are protected by international law and treaty.

Contact your Senators and Representatives and urge them to oppose “the inclusion of revenues from drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in the President’s FY 07 Federal budget.”  CLICK HERE to send a message to your Senators and Representative.
